Caswell County was established in 1777, and much of its history and way of life will be clearly visible as you make your way around the county.

Caswell County got its name from the first governor of the newly established state of North Carolina, and was the first county formed in the independent state.

Rich in history, the county retains more than 300 historically significant buildings and sites, with its crown jewel being the historic Caswell County Courthouse, located on Court Square in the middle of downtown Yanceyville.

Courthouse History
Built in 1857-61, an imposing masonry structure of eclectic Romanesque Revival style designed by North Carolina architect William Percival. The scene in 1870 of the notorious "Chicken" Stephens murder, allegedly by the Ku Klux Klan, which led to the Kirk-Holden War. Governmental offices occupy the courthouse today. Open 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.
